LaDainian Tomlinson Is Back…On The Bench!

September 26, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

LaDainian Tomlinson He was ranked in the top five pre season fantasy football rankings. He was Adrian Peterson before there was Adrian Peterson. LaDainian Tomlinson was the man. L.T. promised a return to prominence this season. The only place L.T. will be returning to is the I.R. report. L.T. will miss Sunday’s game giving him a projected zero points two weeks in a row.

Before the season L.T. said he was fully back and was going to tear it up. After a disappointing season, L.T. cited injuries and a variety of reasons for his disappointing 2008-09 NFL season. L.T. is back alright, he is back to his 2008-09 season form. As a matter of a fact, he is worse. At least he was giving us something albeit a couple of points last season.

L.T. will miss this week’s game once again. Going back to last season, he has missed three of the last four San Diego Chargers games. Tomlinson injured his ankle in the opening game against Oakland. We were told it wasn’t serious as he limped off in a boot. “It’s not anything that is going to keep me out for a long time,” Tomlinson said. “We’ll just wait and see how it plays out… I’m taking it day by day. It is a sprain and that’s all it is.” For fantasy football players like me who own L.T., we should learn a lesson from this. What were we thinking to draft a 30-year old back who missed a playoff game with our top picks?

The reason L.T. screws us more than other players, is that we took him high. For me, he was a keeper. He was ranked as high as third in some pre-draft rankings, so if you got him you took him first. That means you passed up on a lot of great backs, or backs in general who would give you some points for at least starting a game. If you took L.T. first, you may not have taken another back for another two rounds. This means you probably have one other great back to start and nobody comparable on the depth chart. We were duped!

Let this be a lesson for everyone including myself when it comes to fantasy football drafts and the so called, “experts.” Don’t let facts get in the way of a good decision. Nobody should have been ranking a 30-year old running back that missed his last NFL game with an MCL injury in the top five of any position. L.T. fooled us all with memories of those good old 20-point days from 2005. We believed the hype from the experts and from L.T. who kept telling the world he was back.

L.T. is back alright. L.T. is back on the bench just like he ended last season. Thanks L.T. for the wonderful 2009 Fantasy Football Season.
