Fantasy Football Week 5 Heroes and Zeroes

October 13, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Steve Slaton Fantasy Football Week 5 is officially in the books. By now you have an idea of who is for real or who was a one-week wonder. Fantasy Football players this week were treated to several zeroes and heroes due to a variety of reasons. There were plenty of heroes who overachieved as well as zeroes who decided to take the day off. I present to you this week’s Fantasy Football Heroes and Zeroes.

Fantasy Football Heroes –

Matt Schaub – Schaub can be a very frustrating quarterback at times, as can be the coaching of Gary Kubiak. Schaub is one of those kinds of quarterbacks that like to throw in clunkers from time to time to remind you that you don’t own Drew Brees. The great thing about Schaub is that those clunkers rarely come two weeks in a row.

Schuab and the Texans struggled early against the Arizona Cardinals. Being down 0-21 was good news in one aspect for Schaub owners. You knew that the Texans were coming out passing. The negative was how terrible Schaub looked at halftime. However, Schaub turned it around and dominated the second half of the game. After a disappointing half, Schaub completed the game with 317 yards and two touchdowns. That makes three out of five weeks with over 20-point games from Schaub.

Roddy White - White has been a frustrating wide receiver for fantasy football owners this season. The problem with White is that he was an early pick or even a keeper. White sat out of camp due to a contract issue and was never able to get into a groove since rejoining the team. All of the Atlanta newspapers reported that Atlanta planned to work on running the ball during the bye week. Apparently Roddy White never got that memo.

White was a monster yesterday. Even more impressive was that White did this against a very good San Francisco defense. White wound up with over 200 yards on 8 receptions with two touchdowns. This is the Roddy White you thought you were drafting. It still boggles my mind how he can put up 33 fantasy points against the 49ers and 3 against Miami. Nonetheless, White has a great matchup next week against the Bears. Whether this was a one-week wonder or a return to prominence will be answered next Sunday.

Ray Rice - Meet your number-one running back on the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens love to talk about a multi-back system, but make no mistake that Rice is the man in Baltimore. What makes Rice so dangerous is that Flacco loves him in the flats. Rice put up 19 fantasy points in my league without a touchdown. Rice was a huge overachiever this past weekend, after averaging less than 4 yards a carry against the Bengals twice last season.

Miles Austin - I don’t know if this is good news or bad news for Jerry Jones. The good news is that he may have himself a heck of a receiver here. The bad news is that Austin isn’t one of the receivers that Jones threw away millions of dollars and draft picks on in the last two seasons. It is hard to tell whether fantasy owners should drop a player and grab Austin off of waivers or not. See Mohamed Massaquoi for one-week wonders.

Cedric Benson - I hate to break it to you Bears fans, but Benson is having a much better season than Matt Forte is. Benson racked up over 130 yards of total offense, with 120 on the ground against a very good rushing defense. Benson has only had one week with less than double-digit fantasy points out of five games, some against very good teams. Benson was ranked the 24th running back in Week 5 on one respectable fantasy football website. This guy is either going to kill you or hurt you if he keeps getting overlooked. Cedric Benson is the real deal.

Fantasy Football Zeroes -

Steve Slaton - I am done with this guy. Like many, he has killed me every week but one. I should have went with my instincts and never took him knowing the goal-line situation, but I did and you did too if you own him. The Texans defense is terrible which makes just about every game a come-from-behind situation, nullifying the run. Slaton shows so much potential when he does catch the ball, but it seems as if Schaub has lost a lot of confidence in him. Trent Edwards had more rushing yards than Steve Slaton in Week 5! I have been patient with Slaton, but it is time to for all of us scorned Slaton owners to move on.

Derek Anderson - I have to admit it, I bought the hype after last week and had flashes of 2007. Anderson completed two passes after a tremendous week against a very good Bengals defense. Normally I would give him some slack for the bad wind, but he plays in Cleveland for goodness sakes! He had a quarterback rating of 15.1 which was worse than what JaMarcus Russell had in a blowout. Anderson plays the Steelers in Week 6 with a possible returning Troy Polamalu. I don’t expect much better from Anderson.

David Garrard - I can’t say that I am surprised. I was surprised after his game against the Titans but it is obvious that passing against the Titans is nothing impressive in 2009. Garrard went 18 for 31 with 188 yards and no touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks aren’t the Steelers and there is really no excuse for this. Garrard was ranked on one reputable website as the #8 quarterback in terms of expectations for Week 5. He finished behind Kyle Boller and Shaun Hill.

Carnell Williams - The Cadillac stalled in Philadelphia. In terms of what the expectations were for Carnell, he was expected to produce some good fantasy points against the Eagles. He averaged less than one yard per carry in Philadelphia. Williams put up a big goose egg. On a day where the Bucs quarterback put up 40 rushing yards himself, Williams should be embarrassed with his effort against the Eagles.

Chris Cooley - Cooley has quietly turned into one of the top tight ends in fantasy this year. Cooley owners salivated over a matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, Cooley-owners had no idea that their diamond in the ruff would wind up back in the ruff. Cooley registered his first NFL game without even one catch since 2004. Cooley was used to block and taken completely out of the offensive game thanks to an early injury. In the end, Cooley gave your team as many fantasy points as I would have if you started me yesterday.

DeSean Jackson - As a big Eagles fan with a man-crush on D-Jax, this one hurts me to write. However, Jackson was ranked as high as the number two wide receiver, by some experts in terms of expectations for the Buccaneers game. However, none of these experts took into account the emergence of Jeremy Maclin. Maclin had a breakout game which set records as an Eagles receiver. In all fairness, Jackson had a big catch in the first quarter which was called back due to a questionable penalty at best. Yet in the end, after over 100 receiving yards in each of his last two games, zero receptions makes him a zero.

Sharks’ Flash and Crash – Fantasy Start ‘em or Sit ‘em NFL Week 5

October 08, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Matt Schaub Here we are again football fans! Lots to talk about in fantasy football this week. Braylon Edwards is now a New York Jet, Michael Crabtree finally signed with the San Francisco 49ers, Donovan McNabb returns this week and so on. If you’ve been following my column, you will notice that I’m starting to heat up, and I hope you have been smart enough to take some good advice from me. Two weeks ago I predicted the rebirth of Matt Forte, and last week the same with Steve Slaton. Hmm, I’d say it’s looking good, so let’s see what I can give you for week 5.

Quarterback:

Flash

Donovan McNabb, Eagles vs Tampa Bay
Don’t be afraid of a little McNabb rust fantasy owners. In McNabb’s only game so far this year he put up 3 TDs against the Panthers, who even they have a better defense then the Bucs. The Philadelphia Eagles running game will get a boost as well with Brian Westbrook returning so that will open plenty of avenues for McNabb. There is nothing he’d like to do more then show his team and the Philly fans he’s back and healthy. Anything short of 3 TDs from McNabb this week would be shocking!

Matt Schaub, Texans at Cardinals
If anything this is set to be a high scoring affair. Believe the hype, this is the dream showdown between Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. I go with Schaub over Warner here because he has a running game to help open things up and an offensive line that can buy him some time. You know Andre would love to upstage Larry so let’s say hes good for some action which means Schaub is up for some too!

Peyton Manning, Colts at Titans
Unless the NFL is fixing games, this one should be easy. I rarely put Manning here because really, who benches him anyway? But this week he’s a true flash! The Titans have been miserable on defense, and last week David Garrard, yes that David Garrard,\ took them for 3 TDs through the air. If thats the case why can’t Manning get 5? Ok maybe not 5, but 3 should be money in the bank.

Crash
Matt Ryan, Falcons at 49ers
This 49ers defense appears to be for real. Yes, they shut out the Rams last week, but that’s alot more then the Packers did. This Niners defense sports one of the best defenders in the league today in Patrick Willis, and although I normally like Matt Ryan, I just don’t see this as a game where he will go off. This game seems more likely to be won on the ground, so I avoid Ryan this week.

Joe Flacco, Ravens vs Bengals
Flacco does decent things, but it seems the Ravens are more content in scoring on the ground. The Bengals secondary actually has some players on it and beating them with the pass has been no lock for QBs. Although Flacco has progressed nicely, I don’t see this as one of his better macth ups.

Chad Henne, Dolphins vs Jets
We are not playing Buffalo anymore fellas. This is what Chad Henne will be saying in the huddle this week when Rex Ryans defense comes to town. I put Henne on the list because after last weeks decent effort some people may want to play the “fantasy guru” card and try and make a bold move. I highly recommend you don’t.

Sleeper Pick: Derek Anderson, Browns
Handle With Care: Tony Romo, Cowboys

Running Back:

Flash
Brandon Jacobs, Giants vs Oakland
How on Earth can I recommend Jacobs, who got an F grade in my quarter report? Simple friends. Eli Manning is still in limbo after a freak injury last week, and the Raiders stop the run like a rock stops a tidal wave, not at all. Jacobs has the ability to have big games, he just needs the rock, and when the Giants see how much room he will have against this poor defense, he should be busy all day.

Adrian Peterson, Vikings at St. Louis
Duh? Start Peterson, really? I know most of you are thinking it, but the last two weeks I was a little gun shy with Peterson, and was right in doing so. Peterson had 2 tough games against the 49ers (who seem to have his number) and the Packers. This week it is the Rams, the NFCs favorite doormat. This will be a game that Brett Favre will not have to win on his own, so Peterson should be back in the groove. Start him this week and watch him go!

Rashard Mendenhall, Steelers at Detroit
I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t see last weeks 166 yard, 2 TD performance as a flash in the pan. Willie Parker is still iffy with a toe injury and I feel pretty good about the match up the Steelers get this week. Rashard could use some work, and this is the place to get it. The Lions do not play any type of defense well and may be without its best player, LB Ernie Sims. Even if anything else, garbage time should still get him prodcutive numbers, in my opinion anyway!

Crash
Stephen Jackson, Rams vs Minnesota
It seems to be my safety valve to tell you not to play running backs against the Vikings defense, so why stop. Jackson has gotten some decent yardage this year but has not reached the end zone, so going against the number 1 defense in football probably won’t be the cure.

Kevin Smith, Lions vs Pittsburgh
I really like what Smith does. He catches a good amount of passes and has found the end zone a few times this year. However I don’t like what is in store for him this week with the Steelers coming to town. They can be very stingy with RBs, and even though Smith is sometimes fearless, doesn’t mean that the Steelers will suddenly forget how to play defense, plus there is a possibility that Troy Polamalu can be back this week.

Cedric Benson, Bengals at Baltimore
I like what Benson has done this year with 367 yards rushing and a few trips to the end zone, but the Ravens are finding that swagger again on defense. Althought they lost last week to the Patriots, the Ravens did not give up much on the ground. Benson is very much improved from what he was in Chicago, but it’s not going to be so easy here. He missed practice with a hip injury, so keep an eye on him over the next few days.

Sleeper Pick: Jerome Harrison, Browns
Handle With Care: Julius Jones, Seahawks

Wide Receiver:

Flash
DeSean Jackson, Eagles vs Tampa Bay
Jackson is becoming the Eagles money man down the field, and this week McNabb is back to unload the big gun. The Bucs defense does little to scare many, and I mentioned earlier that McNabb was a great start as well. Last week with the Giants I told you if Eli, then why not Steve Smith and I was perfect, so this week play McNabb/Jackson as your combination platter.

Andre Johnson, Texans at Arizona
Once again I hyped the QB so I will hype his main target. In the battle of the “peoples champ” WR duel between Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson, I give the nod to Johnson. This game has the feel of a big time shoot out, and Johnsons advantage is he is THEE man while Fitz has teammates at WR that contribute. Johnson towers over the cards smaller corners, and is due for one of those Andre type days.

Braylon Edwards, Jets at Dolphins
This is not a joke! Edwards wanting out of Cleveland has finally come true and here are some huge pluses you may want to consider. First the Jets GM went on the record and said, “We made this deal for Edwards so he can play. He’s coming in here and will be ready right away”. So he is getting high praise from his new club. Second is that it is a Monday night game so you can bet he will be busting hard to make some big plays and show the fans he wasn’t the cancer in Cleveland. Third is the possible conduct infraction that he has caused. If Edwards is going down with a suspension you know he will go down, ummm swinging. Call it a hunch but I think Edwards gets alot of looks and a fresh start will do him a world of good.

Crash
Roy Williams, Cowboys at Kansas City
I just can not understand what the Cowboys did here? This guy is no numnber 1 WR and his brutal stats have showed us that. Just 11 catches this year and 1 TD? As bad as I think the Chief defense is, I dont think it’s this bad. Williams got his wish out of Detroit, but you can bet that Dallas is trying to find a way to give him back.

Santana Moss, Redskins at Carolina
Moss scored last week, so if you follow his career you know it’s let down time. This offense continues to be bad, and the Panthers are desperate for a win. This will most likely be another snoozer, so you may have to wake Moss up as well as any poor soul who will bare witness to this game.

Santonio Holmes, Steelers at Detroit
Forget what I say about match ups. Holmes is in the midst of a severe slump and since week 1 looks like a blocking dummy. The Steelers seem to have very little use for him in this offense and there are too many talented players who actually show up in Pittsburgh to be ignored. Holmes seems to have played himself right out of favor in this offense, so I’d advise Ward, or Heath Miller, or Mike Wallace or the water boy or anyone else before Holmes.

Sleeper Pick: Nate Washington, Titans
Hanlde With Care: Steve Smith, Panthers

Defense
Flash

Eagles vs Tampa
Giants vs Oakland
Vikings at St Louis

Crash
Cardinals
vs Houston
Titans vs Indianapolis
Bucs at Philadelphia

Now we turn our attention to the waiver wire gems for this week. I know it looks like slim pickings, but in going through all my leagues I have found some decent ball players still out there to be had, so keep an eyes on these guys coming up:

Nate Washington, WR, Titans
Washington finally seems to be getting into a groove and has touchdonws in 3 straight games. It can be tough with a team that likes to run the ball, but Washington is trying to earn his free agent bucks. I say give him a look.

Derek Anderson, QB, Browns
Last weeks 2 TD effort and OT loss seems to be enough to buy him a few weeks as the starter. This week is not a scary match up against the struggling Bills, and don’t worry about them losing Braylon Edwards, he hasn’t caught a pass in 2 weeks anyway.

Merceds Lewis, TE, Jaguars
If you are in a TE league then look at this guy. He is finally filling into form and was very productive last week. David Garrard and this offense have found some life lately and Lewis seems to be getting some play.

Josh Cribbs, WR/Returner, Browns
Maybe the dealing of Braylon Edwards will finally give Cribbs a chance at some true looks. If your league gives points for KR/PR production then he can be a bonus if he gets some time on offense. This guy has amazing speed and is a great playmaker, all the Browns have to do now is get him the ball. Monitor this guy over the next few weeks.

Good luck in week 5 everyone, and don’t forget to catch my contest “Beat The Shark” again this Friday as we have another lovely female contestant going one on one in picking NFL games. You can see this and many other great stories Friday at www.CamelClutchBlog.com.

NFL 2009 Season Week 5 Preview and Picks

October 08, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Carson Palmer NFL Week 5 is upon us as we move past the first quarter of the season. The NFL will try and capitalize off of the success of Monday Night Football. The Vikings-Packers game was the most watched program in cable history. To the new fans that tuned in on Monday, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

The AFC will take the headlines this week with several rivalry games. The AFC South, North, and East all have excellent grudge matches. The first one that catches my eyes will kick off Sunday at 1 at M & T Stadium and pits the 3-1 Baltimore Ravens against the 3-1 Cinncinatti Bengals.

Fun NFL Week 3 Camelclutchblog.com Fact- 64 % of 3-1 teams has made the NFL playoffs since 1990.

The Ravens and Bengals both are coming off of disappointing weeks. The Bengals were able to pull out a win in OT after struggling with the winless Cleveland Browns. In the end a win is a win, even after a lackluster offensive effort out of the Bengals. The Ravens are still crying about their loss to the Patriots and questionable calls. Both teams are looking to make a statement about their 3-1 records. This one has the likelihood of turning into a shootout with two poor passing defenses and two very good quarterbacks going nose to nose in a divisional game.

In my opinion, both teams have been overachievers thus far this year. The Ravens are usually good, but nobody expected an air attack like we have seen out of Baltimore. The defense is much more vulnerable than usual thanks to the departure of Rex Ryan. The Ravens are giving up over 230 yards a game in the air and five touchdowns thus far. The rushing attack is even better than it was last year. Willis McGahee is finally starting to pay dividends for the Ravens. The Ravens may have the most dangerous combination of passing and rushing in the NFL.

Fantasy Football First Quarter Report Cards

October 08, 2009 By: Jeff Porrini Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Drew BreesHello fantasy football fans! Well we are 4 weeks into this 2009 season and as you all know its one quarter of the way finished. So what do we do when things are a quarter over? Well we grade them. Yes here it is, all 32 teams starting position guys and some extra players who get bulk work and how they have faired so far. This is thee must have measuring stick for your fantasy team. If you have A-Grade players you should be moving along nicely. However if you have F-Graded players, perhaps its time to view your bench or the waiver wire. So read up, enjoy, and scold those who come home with a bad report card!

Quarterbacks:

The A Class:
Peyton Manning, Colts, 1336 yards 9 total TDs
Joe Flacco, Ravens, 1103 yards 8 total TDs
Drew Brees, Saints, 1031 yards 9 total TDs

The class of this group is Manning. We all know what Drew Brees has done, but you can always count on Manning to give you points every week.

The B Class:
Aaron Rodgers, Packers, 1098 yards 7 total TDs
Phillip Rivers, Chargers, 1245 yards 7 total TDs
Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers, 1193 yards 7 total TDs
Matt Schaub, Texans, 1047 yards 8 total TDs
Eli Manning, Giants, 1039 yards 8 total TDs
Jay Cutler, Bears, 901 yards 8 total TDs
Donovan McNabb, Eagles, 79 yards 3 total TDs
Brett Favre, Vikings, 837 yards 8 total TDs

The best of this group is a toughy, but im going with Eli Manning. His team is 4-0 so not only is he getting great stats, but his team is winning too. Some of these guys can reach A status with easy weeks coming up.

The C Class
Tom Brady, Patriots, 1129 yards 5 total TDs
David Garrard, Jaguars, 951 yards, 6 total TDs
Carson Palmer, Bengals, 845 yards 7 total TDs
Kurt Warner, Cardinals, 863 yards 4 total TDs
Shaun Hill, 49ers, 700 yards 5 total TDs
Matt Ryan, Falcons, 648 yards 5 total TDs
Seneca Wallace, Seahawks, 645 yards, 4 total TDs
Kyle Orton, Broncos, 906 yards, 5 total TDs

Of this class maybe Matt Ryan does not belong, but he could be a bit better. These guys do decent jobs of managing games, but for fantasy purposes they are mainly back-ups for you at this time.

The D Class (detention time for these guys)
Kerry Collins, Titans, 914 yards, 6 total TDs
Jason Campbell, Redskins, 963 yards, 6 total TDs
Trent Edwards, Bills, 790 yards 5 total TDs
Matt Cassel, Chiefs, 458 yards 5 total TDs
Tony Romo, Cowboys, 990 yards 5 total TDs
Matt Stafford, Lions, 894 yards, 3 TDs

Some of these guys stats may not be quite as bad as some C guys, but these guys have killed their teams, not to mention what they have done to fantasy owners. These guys are desperation or match-up friendly only guys.

The F Class (you should be ashamed if you own these guys!)
Jake Delhomme, Panthers, 601 yards 2 total TDs
JeMarcus Russell, Raiders, 506 yards 1 total TD

There is nothing nice or cute to say about these guys. If these guys are on your team you’re finished. I don’t see any light at the end of these tunnels, move on!

The following players draw incompletes until we see more:
Josh Johnson, Kyle Boller, Derek Anderson, Mark Sanchez, Chad Henne

Running Backs ( these grades are based on point-per catch leagues)

The A Class
Chris Johnson, Titans, 434 yards 2 TDS, 14 rec 117 yards 1 TD
Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars, 296 yards 5 TDs, 16 rec 97 yards
Adrian Peterson, Vikings, 412 yards 5 TDs, 8 rec 56 yards
Ronnie Brown, Dolphins, 369 yards 4 TDs, 6 rec 50 yards

This is the best of the class of the biggest fantasy position. Johnson needs his team to improve to keep up his numbers. Very few guys make the A Grade, and the pressure is on to maintain these spots.

The B Class
Willis McGahee, Ravens, 201 yards 5 TDs, 7 rec 54 yards 2 TDs
Fred Jackson, Bills, 333 yards 0 TDs, 18 rec 160 yards, 1 TD
Frank Gore, 49ers, 241 yards 3 TDs, 8 rec 57 yards, 1 TD
Kevin Smith, Lions, 234 yards 3 TDs, 16 rec 101 yards
Ray Rice, Ravens, 295 yards 1 TD, 16 rec 134 yards
Julius Jones, Seahawks, 251 yards 1 TD, 11 rec 65 yards, 2 TDs
Cedric Benson, Bengals, 367 yards 2 TDs, 6 rec 49 yards
Ricky Williams, Dolphins, 248 yards 2 TDs, 8 rec 62 yards 1 TD
Pierre Thomas, Saints, 212 yards 3 TDs, 5 rec 42 yards

This is an amzing group when you consider the names that are on it, and the names that are not. The Ravens boast 2 players on this list as their running attack carries a heavy load. Beware of injuries to Frank Gore, and to reduced time-share roles for guys like Rice, Fred Jackson, and Ricky Williams

The C Class
Joseph Addai, Colts, 183 yards 2 TDs, 16 rec 100 yards 1 TD
Marion Barber, Cowboys, 244 3 TDs, 4 rec 58 yards
Ryan Grant, Packers, 257 2 TDs, 9 rec 83 yards
Correll Buckhalter, Broncos, 267 yards 1 TD, 8 rec 96 yards
Steve Slaton, Texans, 192 yards 1 TD, 11 rec 121 yards 1 TD
Cadillac Williams, Buccaneers, 191 yards 1 TD, 12 rec 81 yards, 1 TD
DeAngelo Williams, Panthers, 180 yards 2 TDs, 9 rec 84 yards
Rashard Mendenhall, Steelers, 210 yards 2 TDs, 3 rec 39 yards
Thomas Jones, Jets, 229 yards 3 TDs, 2 rec 1 yard
Michael Turner, Falcons, 226 yards 2 TDs, 1 rec 5 yards

A group of guys loaded with talent that just aren’t getting it done. Guys like Slaton, D. Williams, and Marion Barber have been big disappointments to fantasy owners. However, these guys do have the stuff to turn it around and in 10-12 team leagues are more then serviceable.

The D Class
Matt Forte, Bears, 271 yards 1 TD, 13 rec 92 yards
Steven Jackson, Rams, 367 yards 0 TD, 12 rec 67 yards
Tim Hightower, Cardinals, 109 yards 1 TD, 20 rec 172 yards
Brandon Jacobs, Giants, 288 yards 1 TD, 3 rec 13 yards
Reggie Bush, Saints, 148 yards 1 TD, 14 rec 121 yards
Jerome Harrison, Browns, 181 yards, 14 rec 88 yards

Some of these names must be killing fantasy owners right now. Forte and Jacobs with just 1 TD? Stephen Jackson with zero? These are not late-round names here people. Some of these guys are first rounders and may be ready for some fantasy pine. Yes, it’s just the first quarter of the season but keep an eye on these underachievers.

The F Class
Clinton Portis, Redskins, 281 yards 0 TD 4 rec 25 yards
It would appear that Clinton Portis may have reached the end of the road. He has produced nothing and most fantasy owners are waiving him or benching him already. Man how quickly times change.

Incompletes go out too
Brian Westbrook, Knowshon Moreno, Darren McFadden,

Wide Receiver/ Tight End

Ok so I was going to get all lavish and do the grade system again, but this is such a dead-heated pile of guys all around the same that its a crap shoot right now. I gave out an A+ to Steve Smith of the Giants, and then an A to Reggie Wayne of the Colts. Outside of these guys, it has been a real hard first quarter to pin down great wideouts. Ok ,so you should have gotten Mike Sims-Walker and if you havent, you’re probably too late. The usual suspects still get your starts every week. Larry Fitgerald, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall etc, you start with confidence, and you play the matchup with anyone else. I did’nt cheat with the WR catagory, yet I just feel this is one you can all do yourselves for right now. In the half way report, we will be able to seperate the men from the boys!

I also found myself working hard on defense, but it’s also a game to game crap shoot. The obvious choices are there. The Steelers, The Ravens, The Giants etc are all handling their business but not until the mid way point do we know who truly merrits the good grades.

I will be back with you on Thursday with my Start Em/ Sit Em article and don’t forget to check out “Beat The Shark” every Friday at www.CamelClutchBlog.com!

Fantasy Football Impact Of The Braylon Edwards Trade

October 07, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Braylon Edwards Eric Mangini has done it again Jets fans. Adam Schefter has reported that the New York Jets have acquired Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns. The pass-dropping wide receiver will shed the dog pound for the bright lights of New York City. Could Edwards be the offensive missing piece or is this the screw up that Jets fans have been used to seeing for the last thirty years?

Fantasy Impact -

Braylon Edwards owners have a shot at redemption here. Edwards was probably taken between the 4th and 6th rounds in your fantasy football draft. For a guy that has 12 catches and 49 yards, he has been a bust. A high pick like that could kill your team because you obviously passed up on better players at that pick. Edwards’ owners ran to the bank in 2007, but haven’t been able to make a deposit since. If Edwards’ issues were truly the Browns, the losing atmosphere, and the quarterback instability, he could turn it around here. The real upside here in my opinion is trade value. Edwards’ owners can likely flip Edwards for much more value than they would have had yesterday. My advice for Edwards owners, flip him and don’t look back.

Sorry Jerricho Cotchery owners, your diamond in the ruff is back in the ruff. Cotchery is the overall eighth ranked receiver right now in one of my ESPN leagues. Nobody drafted Cotchery with any of their first several picks, so owners got him at a bargain. Cotchery’s impact is now over. He will continue to produce for another couple of weeks, but once Edwards gets comfortable with the offense, he will be expected to be the number one receiver.

Sorry Thomas Jones owners, the Jets will start looking more at the pass with Edwards in the offense. The Jets have been a team like the Ravens where they run to set up the run. Thomas Jones has under produced this season due to the increased play of Leon Washington. I would expect Jones numbers to continue to decrease with more of an emphasis on the passing game.

Welcome back Mark Sanchez! Sanchez opened up the season with a heavy passing effort against Houston which resulted in 272 yards and a touchdown. Sanchez’s fantasy impact has decreased since then bottoming out last week in New Orleans. Edwards will open up the long ball and the offense. Rex Ryan didn’t acquire Braylon Edwards not to pass the ball. If and this is a big if, if Edwards lives up to his potential Mark Sanchez can turn into a real fantasy threat at the end of the season. Sanchez is available in most leagues on waivers or free agency. He may be worth a shot if you have a spot open on your roster.

Get Mohamed Massaquoi and get him now! Mohamed Massaquoi had a breakout game over the weekend, thanks to a change at quarterback. Derek Anderson had some serious chemistry with Massaquoi. The trade shows me that the team is confident that they found their overall number-one receiver with Massaquoi. Massaquoi didn’t have a touchdown, but he had 148 yards on 8 catches. I just checked and even with the news, Massaquoi was still available in free agency. Follow my lead and grab him!

Derek Anderson, put that FF cape back on! In 2007, Anderson came out of nowhere and became the Drew Brees of fantasy football. I picked him up off free agency after Week 2 and he turned my season around. Anderson showed flashes of that 2007 season last week by being the first Browns quarterback to move the ball well since Derek Anderson in 2007. Edwards was reportedly a very divisive player on the Cleveland Browns. Edwards could be that addition by subtraction that the Cowboys were hoping to achieve by cutting Terrell Owens loose. Anderson is well worth a roster spot if you are struggling to find a quarterback on a bye week. Anderson has the potential to get hot right when you need him in December.

NFL 2009 Season First Quarter Report Cards – NFC

October 07, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Eli ManningThe 2009 NFL regular season is a quarter of the way through. After four weeks we are starting to see the contenders separate from the pretenders. Today is report card day for the NFC. Let.s take a look at some teams on the Dean.s List and some teams who are worthy of a big fat “F” for fail.

There are several different components I take into account in grading the teams. The first is overall won/lose record. The second is quality of competition and how teams played up or down to their competition. Third, are these teams over or under achieving based on pre season projections and analysis? Fourth, I take into account coaching and how well teams have been prepared and whether any coaches have made decisions that won or lost games. Fifth, overall individual efforts from team players are definitely taken into consideration in both positive and negative grades. With that said, let.s hand out the NFL First Quarter Report Cards for the NFC.
