Fantasy Football Week 4 – Playing The Waiver Wire

September 30, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Glen Coffee No matter how perfect your fantasy football draft is, you can’t prepare for injuries, bad coaching, and other intangibles. The beauty of fantasy football is that you aren’t stuck with who you drafted. Drafting is only one third of the equation. Trading and playing the waiver wire are just as important. Manipulating the waiver wire can turn around your season like instantly.

Fantasy Football Week 4 is absolutely critical if you have done anything but play to a perfect record. The bright side of being in last place is having the first pick on the waiver wire. This is a great week to turn around your week with the waiver wire. There are several players available at wide receiver, running back, and quarterback that could take you from the outhouse to powerhouse by next Monday.

It is also very important not to get caught up in one-week hype. Greg Lewis may have had the catch of the season, but he has no long term value. Mario Manningham was the fantasy darling last week. One week later he produced a disappointing five points. So be careful not to be blinded by a great week or a bad matchup which turned one week into fantasy gold.

Here are just a few guys that you should pick up if available on your waiver wire…

Running Back – Glen Coffee, San Francisco 49ers. Coffee will be the starting running back for the 49ers this week. Frank Gore is scheduled to miss one-three games. The 49ers are a run-first team. Coffee will get great opportunities against the Rams, and possibly Houston in a few weeks. It is a rare opportunity that you will get the chance to take a starting running back like Coffee off of waivers. Take him, but don’t drop anyone of long term value for him. Remember, once Gore comes back he is back to the bench.

A sneaky fantasy player may take Coffee and use him to trade for someone on Gore’s team. Hey, anything goes in fantasy football.

Ricky Williams, Miami Dolphins. I grabbed Ricky off of waivers immediately after seeing the Colts game. The Dolphins are a team that will run and grind it out using two running backs. Ronnie Brown is the starter, but Williams gets more carries than some starters in time shares around the league. Now with Chad Henne, look for the Dolphins to run even more if they can. Williams has a great matchup this Sunday against Buffalo. I’d take him and plug him in if you need a back. I did and I will!

Quarterback – Kyle Boller, St. Louis Rams. Boller came off the bench and did something the Rams haven’t been able to do…score! This isn’t going to be the greatest show on turf, but there is some definite offensive potential here. Teams have been stacking the box and begging the Rams to pass. They will continue, and Boller is the type of quarterback who can take advantage of that. I can’t say with confidence that Boller is the next 2007 Derek Anderson, but he is definitely worth a shot if you need a quarterback.

Mark Sanchez, New York Jets. The Jets are giving Sanchez more and more opportunities. Rex Ryan is giving him more chances to pass and Sanchez is looking sharper by the week. He didn’t win three games in a row by accident. Sanchez has a tremendous matchup against the Saints this weekend. I am not convinced that the Saints have the personnel yet to turn the defense around. If you need a quarterback or you have a guy on a bye, grab Sanchez and start him.

Wide Receivers, Kevin Walter, Houston Texans. Andre Johnson is getting double covered, leaving Walter wide open. The Texans are putting up big points two weeks in a row and I have no reason to think it won’t stop. Walter will be seeing Oakland, the Giants, and Philadelphia in the next three weeks. All three of those teams have holes in the defensive backfield. Those are great matchups for the Texans and Walter. If you need a wide receiver, he is probably the best number two you will find available in the league.

Sidney Rice, Minnesota Vikings. Brett Favre is known for finding one favorite receiver and locking in on him. I thought it would be Percy Harvin, but it has turned out to be Sidney Rice. Favre and Rice were on fire on Sunday and look to be getting more comfortable with each other week to week. The Vikings have Adrian Peterson, but they also have a buffoon of a coach that would rather pass. The Vikings see the Packers and the Rams in the next two weeks. Both teams have given up some big plays in the air in the short season. If you need a receiver, I’d take Rice and plug him in with confidence for the next two weeks.

Fantasy Football Week 4 – Time To Panic?

September 29, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Matt Forte In a 12-week Fantasy Football season, every game counts. FF players don’t have the luxury of waiting a few weeks for their guys to get hot. It is even more crucial that top draft picks play to their value. A bust with your top pick could make or break your season. Week 3 is over, you’re 0-3 and it is time to come to grips with your busts and make alternative plans.

I wrote a blog a few weeks back looking at guys who should make you panic or not. At this point, you are running out of time and can’t wait much longer for your guys to get hot. But there are a few guys who may pay dividends with a little patience. I am going to go out on a limb here and try and talk you (and me) down off the ledge.

The only and I mean only luxury of going 0-3 or finishing in last place is the waiver wire pickup. You have the first or second shot of rebuilding your team with the hottest waiver wire selections available in your league. I have completely turned my season around by picking up guys like Derek Anderson a few years back and Mewelde Moore last season. I’ll talk waiver wire pickups later in the week.

So here we are going into Fantasy Football Week 4 and your top pick has given you nothing. Panic or don’t panic?

Don’t panic

Matt Forte - I saw Forte listed as high as number one overall in some pre season rankings. Forte has arguably been the biggest bust of all of the running backs. He hasn’t even reached 150 yards in three games combined. Chances are if you own Forte, you passed on some great backs and are probably getting smoked right about now. Don’t panic!

This guy is just too good to be held back. He faced some great defenses the first few weeks. Jay Cutler has put the team in some really bad positions, thus eliminating the run. The Bears are built to be a running team. Once it starts to get colder, the Bears will be running a heck of a lot more. Not too mention, Forte has some tremendous matchups coming up. As a matter of a fact, Forte will only play two good rushing defenses in the next eight weeks.

I like Forte. I also think that over time he is going to be a top back in fantasy football. It is too early to get off his bandwagon and give him up in a trade. He plays Detroit and Atlanta in the next three weeks with a bye in between. If Forte is still putting up these kinds of numbers a month from now, something is wrong. Otherwise, you need to ride this out and hope the Bears rushing attack get their act together.

Steve Slaton - I am sticking by my top pick. I think his slow start came down to scheduling. Slaton played the Titans and the Jets in the first two weeks. The real Slaton began to emerge last week against Jacksonville. Now that Kevin Walter back, defenses will play the pass more and leave Slaton open. Slaton had 76 yards against the Jags and got better as the game went on.

A huge boost to Slaton owners was the fumble at the 1-yard line from Chris Brown. Brown has been the goal line back, taking the scoring situations away from Slaton. Davis fumbled in the fourth quarter and basically cost the Texans the game. There is a great chance that the team loses confidence in Davis and starts giving Slaton some goal line carries. Additionally, Slaton has some great matchups coming up against Oakland, Cincinnati, and Arizona.

Larry Fitzgerald - Like Forte, Fitzgerald was ranked overall number one in some pre season rankings. By normal receiver standards, Fitzgerald has been doing okay. By Fitzgerald receiving standards, he is awful. Chances are that you bypassed a great running back or Drew Brees to draft Fitzgerald. Those kinds of numbers aren’t going to cut it unless you have Adrian Peterson in your lineup.

There are a few reasons I still have faith in Fitzgerald. For one, he is young and just way too good to be held back. A big reason for his decline is his quarterback (just ask his brother). Warner is banged up bad and at 38-years old, it is very conceivable that he just doesn’t have it anymore. The Cards are going to make the change at some point. I don’t like Matt Leinart at all, but he is healthy and loved Fitzgerald. If the Cards are slow on pulling the switch, it may be a long season for you Fitzgerald owners.

He also has some great matchups coming up. Fitzgerald has Houston in three weeks which give up points to everyone. If he doesn’t breakout in this game, I don’t think he ever will. He also has Seattle, the Giants, and Panthers who all give up lots of points to receivers. Stand by your man and you should be fine.

Panic

Kurt Warner – What a difference a year can make. I drafted Warner in the 17th round last year and reaped the rewards. This year, Warner was ranked second behind Drew Brees in some drafts. Between losing the Super Bowl, his age, and coming into the season with injuries, this guy had bust written all over him.

The problem is that if you took Warner, you were counting on him to be your starter. He looked slow and gimpy against the Colts. Yes, he put up 17 points but his future as the Cardinals starter is questionable. You can just look at Warner and see that he doesn’t have the same confidence as last year. When your quarterback has lost it is time for you to lose confidence in him as well. Stick a fork in him, he’s done!

Terrell Owens - It looks like Fantasy Football owners have a T.O. problem. The problem is that you probably took him with your first receiver pick. T.O. didn’t even have a catch in his last game. I couldn’t have picked a worst offense for Owens than the Bills if I tried. You may get a 100-yard game once or twice, but the days of Owens’ Philly and Dallas numbers are over.

The problem isn’t just Trent Edwards, who does stink. Owens is older and isn’t getting off the break like he used to. After watching numerous videos on him, he just looks slower and not nearly as explosive. Owens would always get the YAC numbers or the Yards After Catch numbers. That is where Owens made his bread and butter. He isn’t going to get any YAC numbers without any catches. It is time to trade him, bench him, or put him on waivers altogether.

LaDainian Tomlinson - I wrote a lengthy piece about L.T. last week. This guy is a fantasy football killer. He was ranked in the top five of just about every fantasy football pre season cheat sheet. This means you passed up Frank Gore, Chris Johnson, and Drew Brees to get him. L.T. has bitten you the worst way possible, he hasn’t even played.

We were all fooled. From the experts to regular everyday players, we all bought into L.T.’s promises when he said he was back. Let this be a lesson. No matter what the hype is, don’t ever take a running back 30-years old or older with your first pick. Even when L.T. comes back, chances are he will be splitting time with Darren Sproles. I do think L.T. will still give you some big days. However, they won’t be what you expected when you drafted him. If you can find another sucker out there to buy in on the hype, trade him. Even Ricky Williams or Fred Taylor will give you more production week to week than Tomlinson at this point.

Not all is lost if you own L.T., Warner, or Owens. Make a trade. You may find someone out there who still believes the same hype you did when you drafted them. As for Forte, Slaton, and Fitzgerald, take a shot and try and trade for them if you don’t own them. You may be surprised. Someone may panic and pull the trigger. Now is a great time to make a trade on someone who is under producing. As long as they are under 30, you will be okay.

LaDainian Tomlinson Is Back…On The Bench!

September 26, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

LaDainian Tomlinson He was ranked in the top five pre season fantasy football rankings. He was Adrian Peterson before there was Adrian Peterson. LaDainian Tomlinson was the man. L.T. promised a return to prominence this season. The only place L.T. will be returning to is the I.R. report. L.T. will miss Sunday’s game giving him a projected zero points two weeks in a row.

Before the season L.T. said he was fully back and was going to tear it up. After a disappointing season, L.T. cited injuries and a variety of reasons for his disappointing 2008-09 NFL season. L.T. is back alright, he is back to his 2008-09 season form. As a matter of a fact, he is worse. At least he was giving us something albeit a couple of points last season.

L.T. will miss this week’s game once again. Going back to last season, he has missed three of the last four San Diego Chargers games. Tomlinson injured his ankle in the opening game against Oakland. We were told it wasn’t serious as he limped off in a boot. “It’s not anything that is going to keep me out for a long time,” Tomlinson said. “We’ll just wait and see how it plays out… I’m taking it day by day. It is a sprain and that’s all it is.” For fantasy football players like me who own L.T., we should learn a lesson from this. What were we thinking to draft a 30-year old back who missed a playoff game with our top picks?

The reason L.T. screws us more than other players, is that we took him high. For me, he was a keeper. He was ranked as high as third in some pre-draft rankings, so if you got him you took him first. That means you passed up on a lot of great backs, or backs in general who would give you some points for at least starting a game. If you took L.T. first, you may not have taken another back for another two rounds. This means you probably have one other great back to start and nobody comparable on the depth chart. We were duped!

Let this be a lesson for everyone including myself when it comes to fantasy football drafts and the so called, “experts.” Don’t let facts get in the way of a good decision. Nobody should have been ranking a 30-year old running back that missed his last NFL game with an MCL injury in the top five of any position. L.T. fooled us all with memories of those good old 20-point days from 2005. We believed the hype from the experts and from L.T. who kept telling the world he was back.

L.T. is back alright. L.T. is back on the bench just like he ended last season. Thanks L.T. for the wonderful 2009 Fantasy Football Season.

NFL 2009 Season Week 3 Preview and Predictions

September 25, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!

Peyton ManningThe NFL 2009 season is moving along as Week 3 is already upon us. It looks like a much different season as usual than the previous season. We are already seeing new powerhouses, new fantasy football studs, and some offenses are starting to come alive. It is now that you will truly begin to see who the contenders and pretenders are.

Either Mark Sanchez is the next coming of God in New York or someone has played a cruel joke on Jets fans. This kid is for real. I was convinced in the Titans game he was for real no matter what happened last week. He didn’t put up huge numbers, but once again he was money on third down. Give me a quarterback who can keep cool under that kind of pressure than a fantasy football hero who chokes in the big one or as I like to call it, a “Romo.”

When will people start to wake up and realize that Tony Romo is not an elite quarterback? This kid was anointed as a great quarterback the first time he started for the Dallas Cowboys. Sure, he will give you 300-plus against teams like Tampa Bay every September. However, he not only chokes in the post season but he chokes in the regular season. I don’t know what is so surprising about last week. Does anyone remember how his season ended last year in Philadelphia?

The Jets are once again in the spotlight this week. The Tennessee Titans come to New York/Jersey in what has to be the AFC Game of the Week. The Titans started last season 10-0 and were sure locks to get to the AFC title game. Oh how things can change in one season (just ask Dolphins fans.) The Titans are now 0-2 and are done if they lose to the Jets. The way the schedule breaks down, the Titans are playing for their season in Week 3 on Sunday.

The Jets gave the Titans their first loss season. The Titans are obviously struggling without Hayneworth and a new defensive coordinator. The irony of it all is that the offense is playing much better thus far than they did last year. The Jets are in a tough position here. The Jets just came off of their Super Bowl beating the Patriots last week at home. This could be a bit of a letdown game for the team. That and the Titans desperation are pushing me towards the direction of a Titans win.

Fun NFL Week 3 Camelclutchblog.com Fact- No 0-3 NFL team has ever gone to the Super Bowl. It has been 11 years since any 0-3 NFL team has even made the playoffs.

Speaking of trap games, I am scared to death as an Eagles fan of the Kansas City Chiefs game coming to town. The 0-2 Chiefs come to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the 1-1 Eagles. The Eagles were embarrassed last week by the Saints at home. I can’t remember a home loss that bad since Indy came to town a few years back and Peyton torched us for four quarters. Matt Cassel isn’t torching anyone, but there aren’t too many weapons left to carry the flame for the Eagles either.

In addition to all of the injuries leading up to the regular season, the Eagles are faced with missing Brian Westbrook, Donovan cNabb, and DeSean Jackson. Yes, only the three most important offensive components to the team may not play. Kevin Kolb is likely to get the start once again in place of McNabb. Oh but don’t worry Philly fans, we get Michael Vick and the Wild Cat!

I see disaster written all over this game for the Eagles. There are just too many new players on offense that are bound to make mistakes. As for Vick, did anyone watch that Jets pre season game? Maybe Vick gets back to form by the end of the season, but his legs and his arm just aren’t there. Unless he swallowed the Michael Vick 2004 pill in the last three weeks, I can’t see anything being different in just a few weeks.

A fun game to watch this weekend will likely be the Indianapolis Colts vs. Arizona Cardinals. Peyton showed up everyone including his little brother’s Sunday heroics with his performance on Monday night. It’s one thing for Drew Brees to throw up 5 touchdowns every week, but it is another to do it coming from behind. Manning just makes it look so easy, including opening up the game last Monday with an 11-second, 1-play scoring drive. Manning put on a show in Miami and is bound to do the same thing in Arizona.

Arizona is 1-1 and the Cards far from the offensive machine that they were last year. There are grumblings about Fitzgerald being upset with Warner, Boldin is always crying, and their running game is once again in doubt. Kurt Warner just doesn’t seem like himself this year. Warner admitted not being 100% going into the season. Obviously he is still hurting on Sundays. Warner’s dinks and dunks aren’t going to be enough to get it done against the Colts. The Colts showed their weakness against the run Monday, but the Cardinals don’t have a strong enough running game to take advantage of it.

An interesting game to keep an eye on is the rival game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals showed me a lot last week by coming back after that heart breaker in Denver. Opening up on the road is never easy in the NFL. Playing your first two games in Denver and Green Bay is damn near torture. The Bengals came away 1-1 and have a chance to take a big step on Sunday against the Steelers.

The Steelers are a really hard team to read. Their rushing defense will probably be the best in the NFL this season. Yet, they had a real hard time stopping Jay Cutler in the air last week. They are playing arguably the best quarterback they have played all season. The Steelers are also going to see a re-born Cedric Benson who tore it up for 141 last week. The Steelers may be without safety Tyrone Carter in addition to Troy Polamalu this Sunday. If the Bengals are for real, they will show it this Sunday in their home-opener.

It must be Christmas, because I get the Dallas Cowboys in prime time for a second week in a row. The only thing better than watching Tony Romo choke is having all eyes on the game with no other games being played. The Cowboys Carnival is open for business once again on Monday as the Carolina Panthers come to town. I don’t think there is anybody else playing this weekend that has more pressure on them than Tony Romo or Wade Phillips.

The Panthers lost last week, but bounced back from a terrible opener against the Eagles. Jake Delhomme put up some numbers last week with 300-plus on the Falcons. Yet once again for Panthers fans, Jake throws a crucial interception on fourth down. DeAngelo Williams seems to be running fine, but their quarterback is killing them. The Panthers defense also played a part in the loss last week. The Falcons were able to convert two critical fourth down plays on the Carolina defense. This game on Monday night is purely a toss up.

Fantasy Fix - Ride the hot hand and keep Matt Schaub in the game. I panicked last week and cost myself about 30 points by sitting him. All reports indicate he is either fully or close to over the ankle injury. The Texans have the Jacksonville Jaguars who have one of the worst passing defenses in the league.

You saw what Dallas Clark did to the Miami defense on Monday night. Antonio Gates gets the same defense this Sunday. I know

Gates has started out slow, but you can’t ask for a better matchup to get your star tight end back on track.

Greg Jennings is another guy bound to have a great day on Sunday. Jason Campbell had opportunities against the Rams and so will Aaron Rogers. I see a big day out of that Packers offense specifically Jennings, Don Driver, and Aaron Rogers.

Fantasy Sleeper - There are some great sleeper wide receivers out there on the waiver wire. I tend to believe that Mario Manningham is more than a one-week wonder. The Giants are just waiting for one of their receivers to step up. Eli has been looking for that one guy to lock in since Burress left. Until he blows a big play, I believe that Manningham is that guy. On top of that, you couldn’t ask for a better matchup than the Tampa Bay defense.

If you are a gambler, I like Pierre Garcon on the Colts this Sunday. Peyton has a great matchup with the Arizona defense. Arizona is a team on the verge of an implosion if you read the Arizona papers. Manning is bound to have a big game and Garcon is likely to see some looks this Sunday.

Finally, I am loving me some Ricky Williams off of the waiver wire. Ricky isn’t a starter, but if you have L.T. or another back on the shelf and are desperate, Ricky isn’t a bad pickup. After watching that game Monday night, it is obvious that Ricky will get his touches.

He even looked more explosive at times than Ronnie Brown. The Dolphins are a pure running team and Williams is bound to have some breakout games this season. Keep him around if you have a spot.

Hey, I may have had Schaub wrong last week but I was right on Larry Johnson, Trent Edwards, Jeremy Shockey, and Joe Flacco.

I broke even last week with an overall 8-8 week on my picks. I am 20-12 overall on the season straight-up. Now for the Week 2 Picks (Picks in BOLD) -

Washington Redskins at Detroit Lions
Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams

Fantasy Football Week 2 – To Trade or Not To Trade

September 23, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Miscellaneous

Brian Westbrook After months of meticulous preparation, you felt great about your fantasy football draft. Week 1 was a bit of a letdown but you knew you had a great team. Now, it is the day after NFL Week 2 and you are beginning to panic. Do you start working a trade or do you stick with your players? Unfortunately for some of you fantasy football players, it is time to start working the phones.

I have fantasy football to be nearly the most impossible thing to judge. People will claim to be experts, but those same experts had running backs in the top 10 that haven’t even combined for 50 yards in two weeks. There is no accounting for a bust. Yet there is a big difference between a bust and a slow starter. Don’t be confused between the two or you will be kicking yourself when your “bust” is scoring 20 points for someone else in the playoffs.

Fantasy Football Week 1 – Time to Panic?

September 15, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Steve Slaton Unless you drafted Adrian Peterson or Drew Brees, your Week 1 of Fantasy Football was likely a bust. FF Players plan all year for the fantasy football season from draft guides, cheat sheets, to crafting the perfect lineup. All of that work means nothing when it comes to NFL football. Is it time to panic? For some of you, yes it is.

I can’t remember an NFL Week 1 like this one. Never in my fantasy football lifespan can I recall so many top 10 ranked fantasy players who didn’t produce. We all knew Adrian Peterson was going to produce, but we forgot about one simple component to NFL football, defense. NFL Week 1 was all about defense which is death for fantasy players, highly ranked or not.

Unlike the NFL season, the fantasy football season is 13 weeks plus playoffs. Going down 0-3 could be the absolute end of your season. The key is getting a good mix of starting and finishing strong.

NFL Pre Season’s Fantasy Football Implications

September 07, 2009 By: Eric Gargiulo Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Tom Brady There is nothing meaningless about the NFL pre season when it comes to Fantasy Football. This is a great chance to look at players coming off injury, how players look with their new teammates, and scout how rookies will fare. Here is what I took away from this past NFL pre season.

Tom Brady will be fine. Brady was the highest drafted quarterback in some fantasy leagues. Those owners who hitched their season on Brady rarely ever recovered after he went down. The big question going into this season was whether Brady would be whether Brady would be back to form or not. Most quarterbacks aren’t back to form until their second season. Tom Brady looks like an exception to the rule.

Fantasy Football Draft Kits

September 03, 2009 By: Guest Blogger Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season

Fantasy Football 2009 Fantasy football season is almost here and if you’ve been slacking on your pre-season research then your best bet for success is to obtain a fantasy football draft kit. Why do all the work when someone else has already done it for you.

Fantasy football draft kits are one of the best ways to get professional fantasy advice and information. A good draft kit will give you all the tools you need to have a successful fantasy season including player rankings, customized fantasy football cheat sheets, ADP rankings, mock drafts, sleepers, draft strategy articles and complete analysis of everything fantasy football.

One of the most valuable tools of a fantasy draft kit is the player rankings and ADP rankings. When combined, these can be a great way to gauge players for the upcoming season and give you a clear cut vision on which players will be the ones you want on your team and in what order you should draft them. During your draft, as players are chosen, you will eliminate those players from the list and it will automatically notify you of which available players are the next highest ranked.

A mock draft is also a very useful tool that will allow you to see what type of team various experts have chosen. They do these mock drafts as they were the real deal. The only thing to remember is that many of these mock drafts take place well ahead of the actual draft day and can change so check on them frequently and especially right before draft day.

Fantasy football sleepers are an aspect of the draft that often gets left without much thought. The fact is if you choose your sleepers wisely you could end up with a few late round draft picks that gets as many points for you each week as your early round picks.

The success of “sleeper” players is much harder to determine than the high ranked players. It takes a keen fantasy sense to know which of these low ranked players will be the best choices in the late rounds. Choose wisely and it could change your team dramatically for the better.

Fantasy football draft kits are a wise investment for fantasy experts and rookies. This information could be the key to success for your entire fantasy season. Use the kit and your own expertise and research to put together a winning team that will carry you to the championship game.

Fantasy Football Projections: Quarterback Sleepers for 2009

September 02, 2009 By: Guest Blogger Category: Fantasy Football 2009 Season, Fantasy Football Drafts

Matt Hasslebeck To win in competitive fantasy football leagues, you’ve got to pay attention to the NFL players with the highest potential for sleeper value during the season. One of the reasons fantasy football is so popular is because of the excitement involved in predicting when various sleepers will break out and start producing. If you draft these players in the right round, you will reap all the benefits of drafting a player who produces above his draft position. Only fantasy owners with excellent instincts and solid experience generally see it coming so pay attention to the experts and their yearly projections.

QB Sleepers Worth Considering in the 2009 Season

First and foremost, potential QB sleepers are important to consider. Here are some of the players that have the attention of fantasy football experts this preseason.

Trent Edwards-Buffalo Bills

Edwards showed much improvement since his rookie season in 2007. Last year, he accrued over 2500+ yards and 11 touchdowns. The addition of Terrell Owens to the Bills roster bodes well for Edwards since he will now have multiple receiving options on the field. According to the 2009 Bruno Boys Quarterback “Snooze Alarm” Rankings, “The addition of Terrell Owens at wide receiver is going to change the offense dramatically. Teams will no longer be able to double team Evans and third receiver Josh Reed will now work against lower-caliber defensive backs….but perhaps the biggest bonus the Bills will receive from the addition of Owens is that he’s so good in the red zone, where Evans and Reed struggled to catch passes.” The Bruno Boys give him a ranking of 6 alarms this season.

Chad Pennington-Miami Dolphins

QB Chad Pennington has a very accurate arm, which we all got a glimpse of in 2008. He won NFL Comeback Player of the Year and racked up 3,653 yards. Also working in his favor, the Dolphins have improved their running game so Pennington should have more options this season than ever before. Third year WR Ted Ginn Jr. also has great sleeper value as well. If he can stay healthy for an entire season Pennington could produce far superior numbers this year. I believe Pennington is undervalued in most fantasy football drafts.

Josh Freeman-Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay already has Bryan Leftwich and Luke McCown on their roster, who will most likely get more playing time than Freeman in the beginning of the season. However, the fact that they chose Freeman as one of their early picks in this year’s draft tells me that he’s someone they’re banking on should Leftwich and/or McCown struggle. Rookie quarterbacks typically have poor first seasons, but there’s always a chance that he’ll do well, just look at Matt Ryan last year. FFtoolbox.com writer George Bissell states in his article 2009 Team Outlook: Tampa Bay, “Fantasy owners should keep an eye on Josh Freeman in 2009 and pick him up if he inherits the starting job.”

Matt Hasselbeck-Seattle Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck had some major physical issues in 2008 that kept him off the field so who knows what he will bring to the table in 2009? According to an article by Patrick Brian ONeill on FantasySharks.com titled Fantasy Football Sleepers – Quarterback Rankings Fantasy Football 2009, “Hasselbeck enters the 2009 season with Seattle as a huge question mark. Were the back and knee injuries a one-time deal, or are they going to be nagging him this year also?” Despite these issues the presence of T.J. Houshmandzadeh and a healthy Deion Branch will up Hasselbeck’s game. It will not surprise me if he has a break out season if his body can hold up without any problems. “I see no reason why Hasselbeck can’t post 3,500 yards and 22 TDs,” continues ONeill. Keep your eye on this QB.

These are just a few of the NFL QBs that could surprise everyone in the 2009 football season. The preseason games will offer even more insight into the value of potential sleepers. Good luck with your fantasy football drafts and may your teams dominate in all your fantasy leagues!
